With equal parts courage, compassion, and intrigue, Christine Trent tells an unrestrained tale of love and loss in the rigidly decorous world of Victorian society. But she's certain there's a killer lurking in the London fog, and the next funeral may be her own. When Graham disappears, Violet takes full control of the business and is commissioned for an undertaking of royal proportions. And the solace she's always found in her work evaporates like a departing soul when she suspects that some of the deceased she's dressed have been murdered. Log In to see more information about Christine. Violet’s peculiar but happy life soon begins to unravel as Graham becomes obsessed with his own demons and all but abandons her as he plans a vengeful scheme. She is the author of the Florence Nightingale Mysteries and the Lady of Ashes historical mystery series. ![]() She is empathetic, well-versed in funeral fashions, and comfortable with death’s role in life-until its chilling rattle comes knocking on her own front door. ![]() While her husband, Graham, is preoccupied with elevating their station in society, Violet is cultivating a sterling reputation for Morgan Undertaking. Only a woman with an iron backbone could succeed as an undertaker in Victorian England, but Violet Morgan takes great pride in her trade. A female undertaker in Victorian London suspects death by unnatural causes in a mystery “rich with historical incidents and details” ( Publishers Weekly). ![]()

Eliot![]() ![]() In another recurring theme of Eliot's plays, the Christian martyrdom of the mistress character is seen as a sacrifice that permits the predominantly secular life of the community to continue. As in many of Eliot's works, the play uses absurdist elements to expose the isolation of the human condition. As it progresses, however, the work becomes a darker philosophical/psychological treatment of human relations. The play starts out seeming to be a light satire of the traditional British drawing room comedy. ![]() In 1950 the play had successful runs in London and New York theaters (the Broadway production received the 1950 Tony Award for Best Play.) It was first performed at the Edinburgh Festival in 1949. The Cocktail Party was written while Eliot was a visiting scholar at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey in 1948. It focuses on a troubled married couple who, through the intervention of a mysterious stranger, settle their problems and move on with their lives. ![]() The play was the most popular of Eliot's seven plays in his lifetime, although his 1935 play, Murder in the Cathedral, is better remembered today. ![]() 5/28/2023 0 Comments Who is maud dixon a novel![]() ![]() If so, it's bound to be a blockbuster movie. I hope Alexandra Andrew's superb work is done justice on the big screen. After reading the book it's no surprise to learn that Universal Pictures snapped up the rights to the novel ahead of publication, with The Washington Post screenwriter Liz Hannah set to adapt and direct. Audible narration was superb by one of my favorite audiobook narrators, Therese Plummer. And the twists there were many twists and turns and although I saw some of them coming I was still entertained. A novel about writer's and the publishing industry was of course a big draw for me. To say the novel is character driven is an understatement, I found the characters fascinating. 'Who is Maud Dixon' is an absolute brilliant debut from Alexandra Andrews. There’s a huge difference between the limited and standard van Sandwyk Folio Alice in terms of cost and size, but not so much with content. If you’d like to see inside the books, I also have a fun youtube video that gives you an in-depth ‘illustrated tour’ of many of the Alice books on my own bookshelf, and there’s also a blog post with a little bit of the book’s history. ( and of this collection have reviews of earlier illustrated editions of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass books – most of which are now out of print – while has some fun gifts and the best of the Alice spin-off series and has several interesting foreign editions). This list is mainly focused on English language editions, but there are also a few foreign language editions because they are just too stunning to leave out. The illustrated bibliography below therefore includes only those editions that really stand out in some special way. Including them all in this list would be a daunting task, and to my mind maybe not so useful, as some are much more beautiful than others. There are hundreds and hundreds of different illustrated versions of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. ![]() |
